Function and significance of industrial connectors

2023/07/07

Industrial connectors are electronic components that connect power and electrical signal flow.

Industrial connectors are usually electromechanical components that connect conductors (wires) to appropriate mating parts for current or signal connection and disconnection, as well as devices that act as electrical connections and signal transmission between equipment and components, components and mechanisms, and systems and subsystems. Also known as industrial connectors, plugs and sockets, they were born out of the technology used in the manufacture of fighter aircraft. Aircraft in combat need to be refuelled and repaired on the ground, and the time spent on the ground is an important factor in determining whether a battle is won or lost. Therefore, in World War II, the U.S. authorities were determined to reduce the time spent on the ground for maintenance. They began by modularising the various control instruments and components and then linking them together through industrial connectors to form a complete system. During maintenance, faulty units should be removed and replaced with new ones so that the aircraft could be put into combat immediately. After the war, with the rise of computers, communications and other industries, technology-derived industrial connectors have more opportunities for development, and the market is rapidly expanding. From the point of view of the connection function, industrial connectors can achieve the connection between printed circuits, backplanes, equipment and so on. The main methods of realisation are divided into four categories: one is to connect IC components or assemblies to the printed circuit board, typically IC sockets; the second is the connection between the printed circuit board and the printed circuit board, such as the printed circuit industrial connector; the third is the connection between the backplane, such as the cabinet type industrial connector; the fourth is the connection between the equipment, usually circular connectors. Products with high market share are PCB interconnections and equipment interconnections.
